Back Pain
Back pain is simply pain which is experienced in the region of the back. Usually it is mild and only a short-term annoyance. But other times the pain can be excruciating. In most instances, back pain will last between four to six weeks when left untreated.
What Are The Causes?
There are a number of causes of back pain. An acute case of back pain is commonly related to a muscle or ligament problem. Most frequently, these are the result of poor posture (and ergonomics), stain/overuse, or failing to warm up before exercise. These situations tend to involve a tightening of the muscles or a strain in the ligaments. Although the pain may be severe, it is usually only experienced for a short duration.
Back pain can also be a chronic condition. There are a number of causes of chronic back pain. A bulging (or slipped) disc is the result of the vertebral disc bulging or rupturing so that pressure is applied to a nerve. Though, not all cases of a bulging disc will necessarily lead to pain. Arthritis can lead to a condition called spinal stenosis. This involves the narrowing of the cavity which houses the spinal cord, thus applying pressure to the nerves. Irregularities in the curvature of the spine (such as scoliosis) can possibly cause back pain. Osteoporosis involves bone becoming brittle and porous. This can lead to compression factures in the vertebrae causing pain.
